Anime ABC’s Z Results

Welcome to the Final Results

After four years and twenty five previous reviews, Anime ABC’s is coming to a close. Before I delve into the results properly, I’d like to take a few moments to thank everyone who has enjoyed the series. Additionally, I’d like to state that this isn’t planned to be the last you hear of this series either. I’ve had a secondary goal with this series, and as long as everything goes as planned, I’ll have something cool to share with you later. I can’t speak anymore on this just in case things fall through or take longer, but rest assured that I don’t plan on killing this series off just because we reached “z”. For now, all I can say is stay tuned and enjoy the final review in my first go at this.

Now, let’s get to the final results I know you all want to see. We had 20 unique voters this time and not a ton of options. Still, I was surprised to see that Terror in Resonance ran away with the votes with a landslide victory, taking 11 unique votes compared to second place’s (Blast of Tempest) 6This review will be interesting since it won’t be the first time I’ve considered talking about this show before, in fact back in 2016, I planned a more serious discussion piece on the show’s contents only to scrap it.

Back then, my original idea was simply to ambitious between my real life stuff and actual ability. I can’t say that Terror in Resonance will speak to me in the same way today, in fact I’m sure it won’t, but I can say that I’ll be ready to bring you the best article possible after giving it a rewatch. In some ways, this will make a fitting end to the this series and I can only hope you’ll enjoy it. Thank you again for sticking with this series for all this time, even if you ended up joining part way through.

While you wait for this review consider checking out the previous winner, Yuri!!! on ICE or my big alphabetized list of every anime I’ve reviewed. As always, the breakdown of the votes can be found below.

Other Votes: Zegapain, Zettai Shougeki: Platonic Heart (Master of Martial Hearts), Zero no Tsukaima (Familiar of Zero), Zone Of The Enders (x2), Zaion, Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho (Grimoire of Zero), Zetman, and Zombie Land Saga (I swear you folks never learn on this even after four years, I’ve reviewed this before…)

Anime ABC’s Y Results

Yuri Nation Rise Up!

Taking the gold finish after receiving 9 votes out of the 18 total unique voters, is Yuri!!! on Ice. I did watch this back when it was airing but I never actually reviewed it here so that’s why you saw it on the poll. Not going to lie, this was the show I wanted to win the least, simply because the waves it made aren’t really a secret in the community and my thoughts on it overall are rather plain. However, a rewatch may prove to yield some new opinions or interesting angels for discussion.

I wanted to mention a few interesting takeaways from the final standings for the “Y” round since I got some pretty unexpected results. The biggest one was that every show received at least 1 vote except for Yowamushi Pedal, a cycling anime. I don’t usually review sports shows so I thought this might actually do better.

The other surprises were how many of you really wanted me to review Laid Back Camp. Coming in just one vote shy of tying the overall winner, you guys almost got your wish. In some ways, this isn’t too big of a twist since I know several of you are big fans, but still, I am somewhat surprised.

Now all that’s left is for me to watch the winner and get to reviewing! While you wait for this review consider checking out the previous winner, xxxHOLiC or my big alphabetized list of every anime I’ve reviewed. As always, the breakdown of the votes can be found below.

Other Votes: Your Lie in April (I spaced this on the poll… whoops), Yakusoku no Nebārando (reviewed, please be sure to actually see what I’ve reviewed before doing write-ins), Yuyushiki, and Yuru Yuri

Anime ABC’s – X Voting Round & Results

Special Circumstances

I hope you all enjoyed my review of Witch Hunter Robin the other day and are excited to see what will come next for Anime ABC’s. As you may imagine, “X” is a letter that simply does not have a lot of anime to choose from. After doing my cursory look, I found exactly 2 shows that would qualify for the poll which were:

While I would normally put this to a vote regardless, I personally would really like to watch xxxHOLiC for this series. As such, I am making an executive decision to forgo the vote and simply declare it the “winner” for this round. For the the remaining two letters (Y & Z), it will be business as usual as we will have a healthy selection for both letters.

I know that some of you may be disappointed that I’m not holding a vote or giving “X” an opportunity for a second “redemption” round like I did for “Q”, but the choice I made comes with a few advantages the other does not. Let me explain those real quick:

  • Turnaround – The most obvious advantage is that this speeds things up on my end, which in turn means you’ll get the review faster. That’s a win for both of us as setting up these polls are actually a lot of effort. It is not unusual for me to spend 2-4 hours setting up a poll depending on the number of choices, and even then I often miss a show or two regardless. Then of course, I have to wait for the voting period to pass before I can even start watching as the polls are almost always extremely close for at least 2 options.
  • No Tie – Speaking of closeness, this eliminates the chance for a tie. If that were to occur in this case, I’d end up choosing this same outcome anyway so nothing changes there, just speeds things up again.
  • Passion – Finally, the biggest advantage to this choice is that I actually really want to watch this show. It’s not that I don’t typically feel like whatever show you guys send my way, but out of these two options, I’m really only interested in this one. The other is probably fine, but xxxHOLiC has been sitting in my PTW queue for some time now. This means you’ll get a better end product, a win for us both.

Hopefully this brings clarity to the current round and you’ll understand the unique circumstances for this individual letter. As I said, we’ll be business as usual next time so be sure to start thinking about what “Y” and “Z” anime you’d like to vote for (even feel free to make a suggestion for the poll in the comments here). I suspect that this one will take me about a month to watch and review, so please bear with me in the meantime as some other fun things come out during the wait. Of course there’s always my big alphabetized list of anime reviews here if you’d like to catch up!

Not Sure What Anime ABC’s Is?

Anime ABC’s is a fun community focused event that I run here at Jon Spencer Reviews. Any and all people can participate in this event, even if you know nothing about anime! So how exactly does this all work? It’s simple! Just follow the link above and vote for as many of the listed shows (or provide your own) that seem interesting to you. Each round moves to the next letter in the alphabet, so the current “X” round is the twenty fourth anime ABC’s. This is done to keep things interesting and to allow for more variety with each passing round.

The goal of this series is to encourage community input, interaction, as well as to allow me to discover cool new shows, or in some cases, rediscover ones that I previously watched. You can check out my previous ABC reviews for:

Be sure to click on any of the titles listed above (you can’t click on the pictures below, the link thing doesn’t work in a collage) to see what a finished product will look like!

Anime ABC’s W Results

Legitimately Surprised!

Every round I put a couple of shows that I really want to review, even though I know they have next to no hope in winning. This voting round had Wataten! An Angel Flew Down to Me, World Conquest Zvezda Plot, and today’s winner.

With 14 unique voters, Witch Hunter Robin barely took the lead with 5 votes.

Right behind with 4 votes was Wolf’s Rain and WorldEnd (the one with the stupidly long title). In all honesty, I am glad Wolf’s Rain didn’t manage to win as I’ve seen it before, and while it is good, I am in no hurry to watch it again. WorldEnd I was interested in alongside the ones listed above, but I can’t really complain.

All said, I’m very excited to watch Witch Hunter Robin. It’s been out of print until just a year or two ago even though it aired in 2002. This one may take me a few weeks to go through with everything going on, but I should get this reviewed a lot faster than last round’s winner.

While you wait for this review consider checking out the previous winner, Versailles no Bara or my big alphabetized list of every anime I’ve reviewed. As always, the breakdown of the votes can be found below.

Other Votes: Weathering With You (note from Jon, this was purposefully left off of the vote proper as I can’t rewatch the film to give a good review but I have seen it), Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku, Working, and Wake Up Girls!

Anime ABC’s V Results

It Was a 50/50

This time around we didn’t have much choice for the letter “V”. The other category saw a fair number of write-ins, but of the 18 unique participants, 9 of those votes went to our winner:  Versailles no Bara, or The Rose of Versailles. This 1979 anime is one that’s been sitting on my shelf for some time, so this’ll be the perfect excuse to watch it! However, it comes in at 40 episodes so expect this one to take me some time to work through.

One thing I really love about this ABC series, is the fact that each letter seems to bring with it something completely different than the last. By time we reach “Z”, I’m sure that this will be a fairly unique snapshot of the medium that is anime, in so much that we’ll have sampled a bit of everything. Don’t you find that interesting as well?

Anyway, until I can get to the review proper, consider checking out the previous winner, Uchouten Kazoku or my big alphabetized list of every anime I’ve reviewed. As always, the breakdown of the votes can be found below.

Other Votes:  Voltes V, Vampire Hunter D, Violet Evergarden (Already reviewed, please be mindful of this in the future. Vote discarded.), VividRed Operation, Voices of a Distant Star, and Victory Gundam

Anime ABC’s U Results

Surprise, Surprise, ANOTHER Tie…

Alright guys, we managed to once again have a tie on the vote. I shouldn’t be that surprised, as this has happened more often than it hasn’t. Out of our 20 unique voters, these two anime received 7 votes apiece:

  • Usagi Drop/Bunny Drop
  • Uchouten Kazoku/Eccentric Family, The S1

That’s when I decided I’d turn things back over to YOU to break the tie on Twitter. I won’t lie, you had me worried a bit because both titles were neck-and-neck until the very last minute. So let’s see the results below!

That’s right, I’ll be reviewing The Eccentric Family (S1). I may review the second season shortly after in a separate article as well, but it may not be right away. Speaking of, it will take me a little time to get to this review since my Mom also wants to watch this and we are both in the middle of watching K-On! right now (rewatch for me, first time for her).

Until then consider checking out the previous winner, Tokyo Godfathers or my big alphabetized list of every anime I’ve reviewed. As always, the breakdown of the votes can be found below. The “Other” category saw some legitimate representation in this round, being tied with the bottom core list shows for one title. Note, Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 received a third vote outside of the poll offline and I just didn’t get around to manually adding it to the digital version.

Other – Ushio & Tora, UraBoku/The Betrayal Knows My Name, Utakata, Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199/Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (x3), Umineko no Naku Koro ni, Urusei Yatsura, and Utawarerumono

Anime ABC’s T Results

It Was The Battle of the Films!

With 22 unique voters it soon became apparent that this was a fight between films. The other titles, with the exception of Trigun, didn’t even get close! For a long time it was between the following:

  • The tale of Princess Kaguya
  • My Neighbor Totoro
  • Tokyo Godfathers
  • The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

It wasn’t until the last few votes rolled in that these four movies even diverged from each other. Soon it was apparent, our winner was…

Tokyo Godfathers! I’ve actually seen this one before but I love Satoshi Kon’s stuff and  am looking forward to revisiting this one as a late “Christmas in July” type deal. I can tell you now, if you haven’t seen this one, it is well worth your time. To find out why, you’ll just have to wait for my review 😉

Since this is a film, I’ll probably get around to this fairly quickly, so please keep an eye out and look forward to it. Until then consider checking out the previous winner, Silver Spoon or my big alphabetized list of every anime I’ve reviewed.

As always, the breakdown of the votes can be found below. It seems again that I forgot to include a show, Time of Eve when it came to this list, but at least 1 person gave it some love with the “other” option. Trust me guys, it is tricky putting these lists together!

Other – Tsurune, Time of Eve, To Love-Ru, and Tekkaman Blade

Anime ABC’s S Results

The Fate of the Vote is in One Man’s Hands…

This time around we had 20 unique voters who deliberated on over 40 titles. In the end we had an eight-way tie, truly this was the round of impossible choices! We’ve had ties before, but never this many, and this intense. Each of the 8 listed shows received 5 votes each (in no particular order):

  • Attack on Titan
  • Ghost Hound
  • Rakugo
  • SAO
  • A Silent Voice (Film)
  • Silver Spoon
  • Sound Euphonium
  • Spice and Wolf

I truly had expected a tight race, but this was beyond expectations. Breaking the tie myself is normally what I’d do here but I had a fairly unique opportunity. The last night of the vote, after it had ended, I was just coming home from watching some Golgo 13 with my D&D group (we are on a bit of a break right now) and I realized I hadn’t sent him the vote! For shame… As such, I thought I’d take the opportunity to have him be the decider.

Provided with the above list of options he sat and thought for a few minutes before finally consulting me with his final decision. He said it was a tough choice, both Spice and Wolf and Silver Spoon were viable options, but he said he settled ultimately on Silver Spoon because he thinks I would really enjoy it.

So there we have it folks! Silver Spoon has won the prestigious honor of being our 19th spot in this very cut-throat race. I hope you’ll look forward to the review! I’ll be working on the watch over the next few weeks as I have a few other projects currently in the works. Until then, there will be regular scheduled content or you can always check out the previous winner, Run with the Wind or my big alphabetized list of every anime I’ve reviewed.

Below you can find a breakdown of all the votes. This time I made the pie graph a little more digestible, but the bar graph is there in full. Also a reminder, one of the other votes was for a show I’ve already reviewed, please do not vote for shows I’ve reviewed previously. Consulted the above alphabetized list before voting please!

Other – Scorching Ping Pong Girls, Symphogear (I sadly forgot to include this on the list proper…), School-Live (Already have reviewed), and Shinesman

Which Title Took Home the Gold?

The results are in on our 18th round of Anime ABC’s! We had 20 unique voters this time, which is just slightly below average for us. Most shows received about 4-6 votes each, with the low end being 0 and the high end at 9. The big loser was Radiant, which I can’t say I’m all too surprised about. I never thought it would win, but it didn’t even get a single vote…

Enough anticipation though. Our big winner today is Run With the Wind! This is the first time that a recently aired show has ever won. I really wanted to watch this anyway, so now I have the perfect excuse. For those who don’t know, the source is by the same person who did The Great Passage, which was a show I absolutely loved. I don’t expect this to be quite that good, but it may just surprise me. A lot of you folks seemed to enjoy it, so I’m sure you’ll be anticipating my thoughts on this one.

As usual, I’ll leave the full results below for your viewing pleasure. If you need some content to hold you over until I get this article out, I’ll be posting every M/W/F at 11:00 AM PST unless otherwise noted. Additionally, be sure to check out my look at Cowboy Bebop and its film or consider exploring the big alphabetized list of every anime I’ve reviewed.

Other votes:  Recovery of an MMO Junkie, Ramen Daisuki Koizumi-san, and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai*

*Please note that Recovery of an MMO Junkie and Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai would not have been counted toward the official vote had they won. I already have reviews of each series on the site in my alphabetized list, which is listed in the voting rules. In future rounds, please be sure to utilize that resource to ensure that your vote is not wasted.

Anime ABC’s Q Results

One Title, One Chance at Redemption!

We had a lower turnout than usual, but despite this, it was a very tight race. It turns out when you pit all the fan-favorite shows against each other, folks have a hard time deciding which one should win. With a total of 21 unique voters, one show received 9 votes among them. The winner was none other than Cowboy Bebop!

The plan is to rewatch the series and get an article out. After that, I’ll be watching the film and producing a follow-up article for that as well. This is going to take me awhile because I’m losing my Amazon Prime account, so that means I need to finish a few shows they have that are still exclusive before anything else. After that, this’ll have my full attention though.

If you would like something to enjoy in the intern, you can read my article on Psycho-pass from the last voting round. Alternatively, check out my giant alphabetized list of every anime I’ve reviewed/mentioned since the site’s creation. I’m sure you can find some great reading there.

As always, you can see the full results of the votes below. It was awful close so I’m sure you’ll be curious to see what titles almost won. Even my personal pick only managed second place (but what one could that be?).
