Finding Balance – #Controversed Issue 2

Last Time on #Controversed…

Previously I gave a brief introduction to talking about controversy and introduced the month-long article series I’ll be doing here each week. The big focus of that article was finding balance in your approach, and today’s issue is going to continue that conversation. This is the second article in said weekly series called, #Controversed, as part of an event I’m sponsoring with Moya of The Moyatorium. Be sure to check out the first issue to learn more about the event. Continue reading “Finding Balance – #Controversed Issue 2”

Call to Action & YOUR Input Needed!

Heya Folks!

I’m writing you all today with some important questions. In some ways this is a check-in with folks, but also a call to action. As many of you know, I run a myriad of activities, post blog articles, and a whole lot more! That’s why I’m hoping you’ll hear me out and consider improving what I can offer you in exchange for more consistent support. Let’s jump right into the details. #Anitwitwatches Season 10 – Kanon (2006) & Announcement

Welcome to the Tenth #Anitwitwatches!

As winter comes into view and we move closer to the end of the year, it feels fitting that the 10th watch will be bringing us there! Not only that, but to my surprise, you all picked a winter themed anime:  Kanon (2006). Hope you are ready for some tears, but don’t worry, like most Key stories things tend to have a positive spin by the end. I hope you’ll look forward to this (often overlooked) show! The watch begins 11/16/20.

Below you’ll find information on what the watch is as well as the schedule for the tenth season of #anitwitwatches. Thank you to everybody who has participated in the past and all of you who will be joining for the first time with this series!

What is #Anitwitwatches?

This is a weekly community event meant to bring folks together to revisit old favorites and discover new shows. It’s meant to be something you can get as involved in as you want, there is no pressure to participate every week or every watch, but we’d love to have you to share in the experience and discuss the shows we are watching all the same!

I was inspired to do this after seeing the “rewatches” that people do over at Reddit in the r/anime sub. Since I interact with a lot of you guys on Twitter, I thought it would be the perfect place to do something similar! That said, even if you do not have a Twitter you can still join in by posting any content via WordPress, YouTube, or whatever suits your fancy. If you do, be sure to send me an email at jonspencerreviews@gmail.com so I can share your wonderful creations!

For everyone else, simply watch the episodes for the week based on the schedule below. Make sure to use the hashtag, #anitwitwatches when you do, and that’s it! Discuss with the other folks participating, create content, and generally just have a fun time!

This next show was chosen based on YOUR votes, so let’s get to the watch schedule.

Kanon (2006) Schedule

As is our norm, we’ll be taking a short one week break before starting Kanon (2006). This is to give folks a brief break before jumping into a new show. I checked dates and there was no reason to take time off for Thanksgiving or Christmas, so there will be no additional breaks in this period. We will be keeping the Monday time slot for this watch after careful consideration and feedback.

If you have not done so, you can see where you can watch Kanon (2006) for free, and legally, by using because.moe. Unfortunately, I cannot realistically check all regions but I aimed to make this as accessible as possible. That said, I won’t stop you from doing what you need to in order to participate. The more the merrier!

Here are the dates (all Mondays) and the episodes for each:

That’ll make this watch 10 weeks long. I hope you’re excited to watch this one and I look forward to all the excellent discussion!

Talking Controversy – #Controversed Issue 1 & Announcement

I’m no Stranger to Controversy

Whether it’s Goblin Slayer or Uzaki-chan, there seems to be no shortage of controversy when it comes to the anime community. Hell, even outside of it the internet always seems to have something it’s worked up over. Navigating these kinds of topics can be a bit of a challenge, but I’d like to share my perspective on how to approach them. This is the first article in a weekly series called, #Controversed, as part of an event I’m sponsoring with Moya of The Moyatorium. More information will be provided at the end of the article. English Eerie Campfire Tales – Event Announcement!

Gather ‘Round the Fire…

It’s time to start October off right! Welcome everyone to the announcement of the English Eerie Campfire Tales event. Through the month of October I’ll be hosting an event where you’ll have a chance to submit a spooky story that will be read in my Discord for our Halloween get-together on October 30th. Let’s dive right in to how all of this is going to work.

What You Need to Do

Everyone who wants to participate is tasked with writing a short story using either version of the role-playing game, English Eerie. Don’t worry, the game itself is designed for doing this and it’s a very simple process that may be done over several smaller sessions or in one larger session that takes a few hours. Here’s all the info you need on the game:

  • English Eerie (free version) – This version of the game is everything you need. It’s technically pay what you want, but you may enter zero for the amount and get it for free. This ensures everyone is able to participate in the event. You’ll find 5 scenarios to pick from and are welcome to use any of them for the base of your story. Additionally, if you decide to get the second edition of the game, you may use these scenarios still. Download the game here.
  • English Eerie (Second Edition) – If you think this game sounds really awesome, the second edition of the game has 10 scenarios and supports play with more people. It’s very similar to the free version with just a few updates on how things are played. By no means do you need this version as their is a cost of just under $8 for this. I have each version and find both to be solid products, they have my recommendation. You can download this version here.

You have from now until October 29th, 11:59 PM PST to write and submit your story. This doesn’t have to be your first play of the game either, so feel free to take your time with this. Then on October 30th, 7 PM PST a dramatic reading of all submissions will be held in my Discord. You may choose to read your story during this event or I’ll read it for you, that way there’s no pressure. Of course, when you submit your story you may always opt out of having it read aloud.

How to Submit

To submit your story you may do one of three things:

  1. Join my Discord and submit a link to your story in the #submissions tab
  2. Tweet your submission using the hashtag #EnglishEerie and tagging me (@JS_Reviews)
  3. If for some reason you don’t have access to either of these two platforms, you may always email me at jonspencerreviews@gmail.com

Your submission should only be the story but I would like for you to include what scenario was used along with a title. Optionally, you may include an additional second version where you explain the decisions you made based on the game’s mechanics but it is not required. I find that interesting and I’m sure others will as well, but again, it’s completely optional.

#Anitwitwatches Season 9 – Another & Announcement

Welcome to the Ninth #Anitwitwatches!

I’ve been planning a spooky Halloween flavored watch now that we are approaching October, so all of the options on the poll were themed around that. I’m not surprised that Another was the show that won out, given a lot of you haven’t seen it and, really, the show is pretty ideal for a group watch like this. For the shows that missed out, they’ll have their day eventually. Join us starting 9/28/20 for the discussion and fun!

Below you’ll find information on what the watch is as well as the schedule for the ninth season of #anitwitwatches. Thank you to everybody who has participated in the past and all of you who will be joining for the first time with this series!

Another Schedule

No break this time, we are going to dive right into things since we just had a break and the last watch was a film, so there’s no real risk of burnout here. We will be keeping the Monday time slot for this watch after careful consideration and feedback.

Anime ABC’s Z Results

Welcome to the Final Results

After four years and twenty five previous reviews, Anime ABC’s is coming to a close. Before I delve into the results properly, I’d like to take a few moments to thank everyone who has enjoyed the series. Additionally, I’d like to state that this isn’t planned to be the last you hear of this series either. I’ve had a secondary goal with this series, and as long as everything goes as planned, I’ll have something cool to share with you later. I can’t speak anymore on this just in case things fall through or take longer, but rest assured that I don’t plan on killing this series off just because we reached “z”. For now, all I can say is stay tuned and enjoy the final review in my first go at this.

Now, let’s get to the final results I know you all want to see. We had 20 unique voters this time and not a ton of options. Still, I was surprised to see that Terror in Resonance ran away with the votes with a landslide victory, taking 11 unique votes compared to second place’s (Blast of Tempest) 6This review will be interesting since it won’t be the first time I’ve considered talking about this show before, in fact back in 2016, I planned a more serious discussion piece on the show’s contents only to scrap it.

Back then, my original idea was simply to ambitious between my real life stuff and actual ability. I can’t say that Terror in Resonance will speak to me in the same way today, in fact I’m sure it won’t, but I can say that I’ll be ready to bring you the best article possible after giving it a rewatch. In some ways, this will make a fitting end to the this series and I can only hope you’ll enjoy it. Thank you again for sticking with this series for all this time, even if you ended up joining part way through.

While you wait for this review consider checking out the previous winner, Yuri!!! on ICE or my big alphabetized list of every anime I’ve reviewed. As always, the breakdown of the votes can be found below.

Other Votes: Zegapain, Zettai Shougeki: Platonic Heart (Master of Martial Hearts), Zero no Tsukaima (Familiar of Zero), Zone Of The Enders (x2), Zaion, Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho (Grimoire of Zero), Zetman, and Zombie Land Saga (I swear you folks never learn on this even after four years, I’ve reviewed this before…)

Anime ABC’s – Z Voting Round

The Final Vote is Upon Us!

It’s been a long journey these past 4 years, but we are sadly coming to a closing out this rotation of Anime ABC’s. Don’t worry though, this isn’t the end of the project, I still have a bit more up my sleeve in that regard. For now though, let’s stick to the main event:  the vote!

Anime ABC’s Z Voting Round Link <- Click Me!

Voting is open from today until 9/22/20 11:59 PM as usual.

Remember, if a show is missing from the list, be sure to consult my alphabetized list of everything I’ve ever discussed here. If you don’t see it there, go ahead and vote for it using the “Other” option. Encourage other folks to vote for it as well, it could always win!

Not Sure What Anime ABC’s Is?

Anime ABC’s is a fun community focused event that I run here at Jon Spencer Reviews. Any and all people can participate in this event, even if you know nothing about anime! So how exactly does this all work? It’s simple! Just follow the link above and vote for as many of the listed shows (or provide your own) that seem interesting to you. Each round moves to the next letter in the alphabet, so the current “Y” round is the twenty fifth anime ABC’s. This is done to keep things interesting and to allow for more variety with each passing round.

The goal of this series is to encourage community input, interaction, as well as to allow me to discover cool new shows, or in some cases, rediscover ones that I previously watched. You can check out my previous ABC reviews for:

Be sure to click on any of the titles listed above (you can’t click on the pictures below, the link thing doesn’t work in a collage) to see what a finished product will look like!

#Anitwitwatches Season 8 – The Princess and the Pilot

Welcome to the Eighth #Anitwitwatches!

We’ll be doing something a little different for this season of the watch so please be sure to read this full article for all the relevant information. To start, we are going to be watching a film that was suggested by patron yon.nyan called The Princess and the Pilot thanks to your votes. I don’t know much about it but it seems like it’ll be a pretty fun film!

Below you’ll find information on what the watch is as well as the schedule for the eighth season of #anitwitwatches. Thank you to everybody who has participated in the past and all of you who will be joining for the first time with this series!

The Princess and the Pilot Schedule

We will be taking a 2 week break, meaning that we will NOT be watching anything for the week of 8/31/20 OR 9/7/20. This is to give me time to properly prepare for hosting the watch and give everybody else a little break before starting something new. We will be keeping the Monday time slot for this watch after careful consideration and feedback.

To offer more clarification beyond the usual speech, I want to further clarify why we are taking a two week break and the plans for the next watch. I happened to get asked in for jury duty so I need to take an additional week off, plus Labor Day is one of the days we’d normally watch. Therefore, it just made sense to give an extra two weeks. However, the biggest reason by far is my plans for the season 9 watch. I won’t say what I have planned exactly, but you better get ready for some spooky fun 😉

If you have not done so, you can see where you can watch The Princess and the Pilot for free, and legally, by using because.moe. Unfortunately, I cannot realistically check all regions but I aimed to make this as accessible as possible. That said, I won’t stop you from doing what you need to in order to participate. The more the merrier!

Here’s the super easy schedule for the film, it’s exactly one day:

Since this is a film, we’ll only be having the one watch date so nice and simple. I hope you’re excited to watch this one and I look forward to all the excellent discussion!

Saying Goodbye to The Rolling Girls – Concluding our Seventh #Anitwitwatches

Come and Vote!

The time has arrived once again to say goodbye to another great season of #anitwitwatches! For our seventh season of the watch we had The Rolling Girls, which is a weird little spectacle that a lot of folks missed out on. I think folks have had a pretty good time with it so far, even if we can all pretty much agree it isn’t super amazing or anything, but sometimes a show’s “uniqueness” can really make it worthwhile regardless. Below I’ll leave a link to our vote on Twitter where you can help decide what we’ll be watching next. Keep an eye out as we’ll be announcing the winner alongside the concluding thoughts for The Rolling Girls on 8/24/20.

I’ll be reviewing The Rolling Girls shortly after the watch concludes, so please look forward to that as well!

What is #Anitwitwatches?

This is a community initiative I started a few months ago where we get together and collectively watch an anime. Then, we talk about it on Twitter using the hashtag #anitwitwatches. The first ever watch was for Tonari no Seki-kun which was a lot of fun. You can view more information on the watch, as well as my review on Seki-kun here.

Here’s a complete list of every show watched and reviewed based on what season of the watch they were featured in:

  1. Tonari no Seki-kun
  2. Rampo Kitan
  3. School Days
  4. Girls’ Last Tour
  5. Wandering Son
  6. The Perfect insider
  7. The Rolling Girls – Review coming soon!

Why is X Show on the Poll?

As I mentioned last time, each show was carefully considered using a series of criteria to ensure that this activity remains fun and varied each time. This time around the #anitwitwatches poll only consists of films. That’s for a few reasons. The first being that I have something in mind for October and didn’t want to overlap. The second being I have jury duty all of September and my schedule for this event got thrown off as a result. A short summary is provided below and in the actual voting thread above as well.

  1. The Princess and the Pilot – A Patron pick thanks to Yon.Nyaan! I really don’t know much about this movie but it sounds super interesting. A love story set in a time of war. Beyond that, I don’t really know but I’m certainly intrigued!
  2. Lu Over the Wall – Hey, another Patron pick! This time we have Scott to thank. Yusa has been in the spotlight when it comes to the anime community for some time, but even still, he’s not somebody who’s work has been seen by many in the anime community. This film was an exception to the normal criteria something needs to satisfy in order to qualify for the watch, but I think it’s an entry that would be worth it!
  3. Night on the Galactic Railroad – An older film that I included merely for my own self-indulgence. I’ve wanted to watch this for sometime, but if that’s not incentive enough, this is a prerequisite to me reviewing Penguindrum, a series you’ve all been requesting from me for some time now. So maybe vote for it?
  4. In This Corner of the WorldWhile this is a war-time story it’s not like the rest. The color palette should make that obvious. I don’t really know all too much about it but it’s been sitting in my queue for ages.

A Note About Patrons

You’ll notice that two of the options were provided by Patrons this time around. One of the benefits to being a Patron of mine is having a say on community projects like this along with several other perks, like an extra vote on this poll. This will be a new feature of this series moving forward where at least one option on every poll will be a Patron pick.

Why should you become a Patron? Beyond the perks, the main reason to pledge your support for what I do here is to help me keep programs like this going. Eventually, I’d love to give away a copy of every show we watch for this series to lucky participants. Plus, your support helps pay the bills, which is kind of important! So please consider learning more about the Jon Spencer Reviews Patreon by clicking the button below.

Join in the Fun!

So get to voting! I hope to see you for the next watch and would love to hear about shows you’d like to see added to the poll in the future. If you have any questions feel free to ask, I’d be more than happy to answer!
