Top 10 Anime I Watched in 2017

Exactly What it Says on the Tin

I actually remembered to do one of these this year! Here are the top ten shows I watched in 2017. The only rules are that I can only mention shows I finished for the first time during 2017 and they have to be complete. No ongoing stuff (sorry Magus Bride) I watched a lot of shows (78~) this year so it was a tough choice for some of these. Let’s get this party started with the number ten spot! Anime ABC’s – I Voting Round

It’s That Time Again!

After a record breaking amount of votes for the previous round, I’m excited to see how many votes we can muster this time for the I round. Please remember to encourage people to vote by sharing this article or the link to the survey; it’s a real help!

Anime ABC I Voting Round [Link] <- Click Me!

Voting will be open from today until 8/29/17 at 11:59PM PST.

Again, thanks so much for your contributions on this series. I couldn’t do this one without all of you! I hope we can continue to grow the series and our community with each new round as well. As always, thanks for voting!

Not Sure What Anime ABC’s Is?

Anime ABC’s is a fun community focused event that I run here at Jon Spencer Reviews. Any and all people can participate in this event, even if you know nothing about anime! So how exactly does this all work? It’s simple! Just follow the link above and vote for as many of the listed shows (or provide your own) that seem interesting to you. Each round moves to the next letter in the alphabet, so the current “I” round is the ninth anime ABC’s. This is done to keep things interesting and to allow for more variety with each passing round.

The goal of this series is to encourage community input, interaction, as well as to allow me to discover cool new shows, or in some cases, rediscover ones that I previously watched. You can check out my previous ABC reviews for:  Anohana, Bacanno!, Code Geass, The Devil is a Part-Timer, Erased, Flowers of Evil, Gunslinger Girl (S1-2 + OVA’s)or Hai to Gensou no Grimgar by clicking either of their respective titles for examples of what the end result looks like.

So what are you waiting for? Vote now and be sure to come back next week to see which show ended up winning this round.

Top 25 Anime Openings

nfzmig8When the OP is Just Right…

I know it’s been awhile since I’ve personally put an actual article up on here. So I thought I’d get back into the swing of things by celebrating some of my favorite anime openings. I’ve seen a couple hundred anime, so this list took some careful consideration to whittle down to just 25.

The list is in no particular order and the only rule is that the opening has to have come from a show I’ve seen. Other than that, no repeats for stuff I’ve reviewed outside of honorable mentions. Obviously this is just my personal taste, so if an OP you love isn’t on the list I probably didn’t see the show or just didn’t like the opening that much ¯\_(ツ)_/¯  Continue reading “Top 25 Anime Openings”

Anime ABC’s – G Voting Round

Time Again to Vote Folks!

Anime ABC G Voting Round [Link] <— Click Me!

Voting will be open from today until 6/30/17 at 11:59PM.

I know I’ve been gone for a bit due to Uni, but now that I have officially graduated with a degree in Marketing (Yay!) let this be the first marker of my return to the blogging realm! Please note that the survey isn’t going to look quite as great as it did in previous rounds. I had to downgrade to a free account since I can no longer use my school one. Other than no longer looking extra pretty, the survey is functionally the same as the others.

Remember to encourage others to vote for your choice. Let’s shoot for a new high score on number of votes this go around, I know we can do it!

Thanks again for voting!

Anime ABC’s is a fun community event that I run here at Jon Spencer Reviews. Any and all are welcome to participate in determining what anime I’ll be reviewing next for this series. Each voting round cycles to the next letter in the alphabet, that means we are currently on our seventh voting round. Anime ABC’s F Results

This One Was a Real Nail Bitter Folks

FLCL and Flowers of Evil were going back and forth throughout the voting period. For awhile it looked like FLCL was going to win, but suddenly near the end of the voting period, the two titles were all tied up and it was anyone’s game. In the event of a tie, I would choose between the two based on various criteria (a very secret process that involves my personal preferences) but this was not how this round turned out. In the hours of twilight, a victor emerged with a total of 6 whole votes:  Flowers of Evil.

Man it would have been funny if some other random title dethroned the two front runners but that’s not how this one turned out. I’m actually glad Flowers of Evil managed the victory because I haven’t seen this anime yet while I have seen FLCL already. I’m excited to be watching this one and have been in the mood for something pretty dark, which Flowers of Evil seems to promise.

We had a very small voter turn out this time around with a total of 9 unique voters, but given when I put this up and wanting it closed out by the start of my Spring Vacation, this is not at all a surprise or really all that low. If anything, it is more surprising that FLCL and Flowers of Evil were voted for with as much fervor as they were. I expected Brotherhood to be more of a contender, but am pleased with how things turned out.

I’ll be busy with the Ghost in the Shell live-action film later this week and Your Name the week after, so I may not get to finishing this anime over the break as I had originally intended. The series is only 12 episodes so it shouldn’t be too far out by time I finish this one. I’d like to not take over a month like last time with Erased :p

As always, below you’ll find a breakdown of the votes. I’m looking forward to this review, and I hope you are too!

Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor (Season 1) Review – Gambling is Serious Business

Serious Business, With Serious Consequences

80032After finishing Kaiji:  Ultimate Survivor, to be further referred to as Kaiji, I felt it was necessary to immediately do a write up. Normally, I would wait a bit, think about it some, and do this, but not for this show. I have a passion for the “mind game” genre which Kaiji belongs to and have waited a good long while before watching. Did it live up to all the praise, or is this anime not worth taking the gamble on?

Anime ABC’s – E is for Erased

Erased Has Excellent Direction & an Interesting Premise, but is That Enough?

3727644b109279e2cb405ac89b0f293f1452549294_fullAfter over a month of waiting I am finally getting to this review of Erased! This is the first Anime ABC’s show that I haven’t seen prior to it winning a vote. I was really excited to have a show win that I hadn’t seen yet. I had been wanting to watch Erased, or Boku dake ga Inai Machi it’s Japanese title, pretty much since it aired back in the Winter season of 2016, but just didn’t get around to it. This anime was pretty contentious so where exactly do I stand? Continue reading “Anime ABC’s – E is for Erased”

Want to Know Why I Have Been Putting Off My Erased Review?

I’ve Been Writing a Paper

Along with 3 other individuals, I had to write this really long paper for what is essentially a graduation project for my Marketing degree. I still have one term left, but it should be a lot more laid back than this term. I know the Erased article is long over due, but I promise it is going to come out ASAP now. I’m taking the day for myself to finish up bits and pieces for the very little that remains of my term but the Erased article is the first thing on the docket to finish up come tomorrow, no later than Friday (just going to depend on how long it ends up being, don’t want to rush it out for the sake of rushing). Any way, if you want to read the 20+ page report, you can do so below.

The Report:

A quick note about the paper itself. There are some minor problems that we probably missed and the Appendix has some improperly formatted tables but at this point I just said, “F*ck it!” and turned it in as is. The thing has lots of special formatting and is far too long to retype so you can download and review the report here:   Final Submission
