High School Fleet – Mini Review

That Rap Though…

high-school-fleet-haifuri-44258High School Fleet was one of those shows that I didn’t expect much out of. Having recently finished Girls Und Panzer at the time, I thought I’d just take a look at this show as it aired back in Spring 2016. However, by the end of episode 1 I was intrigued enough to keep going. The show throttled the line between overly silly and genuinely interesting for most of its 12 episode run. Unfortunately, the show fell flat by the end and was pretty disappointing.

On the surface this looks to be another, “cute girls doing cute things” show, just on boats. That’s totally fine with me. However, all of a sudden the plot takes a pretty major twist in episode one by becoming this tense mystery show with seemingly dire stakes. Sounds pretty good, right? At first, absolutely!

The problem with the show was with its story, as it was really engaging for about half of its run but ran out of steam quickly after. Once the big mystery was solved, the story really didn’t have anything to offer. Well that’s not quite true, the episode where the girls hold a festival was probably my favorite episode in the entire series. It was funny and the rap was hands down the best.

Production IMS did a great job with the animation especially the CG battle scenes. They never looked really ugly or distracting which is fantastic. Character designs were also a plus in my book too. No real complaints there.

In the end, I wouldn’t really recommend this show to anybody. It had its moments and wasn’t terrible but it was nothing special either. If you are a big fan of the guy who directed Girls Und Panzer you might want to check this out, but most are better off passing altogether.

Did you happen to get sucked into High School Fleet back when it was airing? Was it it a major hit for you or was this a wrong course in your anime watching career? 1. It was… Mostly meh. They spent the entire series more-or-less chasing Musashi and fight bureaucracy for Reasons. The final explanation was, well, basically lame.

Which was annoying because there was a so much that could have been done with basic ideas in the show.

I think the best thing to come out of it was this AMV, set to Johnny Horton’s “Sink the Bismark”.

  2. Hmm…well seeing as I still have enough to see anyway, I’m thinking that I am going to be giving this one a pass. At least for now. You had me intrigued with the storyline in the beginning, but, in the end I’m thinking I can spent my time on better shows lol 😂😂 Great post though 😊
