Really, I Just Don’t Like This Guy
Here’s the schedule and all that. Recently I rewatched an anime that used to be on my favorite’s list waaaay back in 2015. After doing so, the show dropped out of my favorites. I still really enjoy Guilty Crown but now that I have oodles more anime experience I can’t help but feel a lot of its story is bogged down with an over reliance on troupes. Additionally, the show is just too ambitious for its relatively short runtime. It ends up being kind of annoying, just like today’s pick from the same show.
Every single time Daryl walked on screen I would let out an audible sigh and note how much I hated him. For whatever reason, he is cartoonish in his evilness and so beyond any kind of redemption that it baffles me that the show actually tries to make you like him. Not only that, but they try to redeem him in the end too. Why?
His character is introduced when the government is doing something dumb. People are where they shouldn’t but he gets framed like a nice guy for all of two seconds. Then he goes from 0 to 100 real fast and decides murder is the way to go for the dumbest reasons. Who cares though? His name is “Kill ’em All Daryl” for a reason.
On top of this, a lot of the male cast suffers in a similar fashion. They are just too over-the-top in everything. Guy is a terrible leader and such a jerk that it’s amazing anybody respects him at all. I could literally go on all day about this stuff.
Guilty Crown used to be one of my favorite shows but after this rewatch and having subjected myself to the terribleness of this character I couldn’t allow it to remain there. I had always recognized its flaws but man, it was worse than I expected this second go around. This kind of became a mini review of Guilty Crown.
Since I am talking about a lot of negatives here, let me note some positives about this anime. The animation is borderline film quality for almost the whole show, the music is beyond amazing, and there are tons of really interesting ideas thrown around in Guilty Crown. It really is a poor man’s Code Geass mixed with a bit of Eva with some nice twists here-and-there. Solid effort, but lackluster execution that still makes for a watchable experience. If you haven’t seen a lot of anime, it is probably one you’ll enjoy a lot.
Turning things over to you know. What character in anime can you just not stand? Do you agree with my pick? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below. If you enjoyed the article please consider giving me a small donation via Ko-fi. Tomorrow I’ll be back again to talk about something a bit more fun: my favorite goofy character in anime. I hope to see you then, and as always, thanks for reading!
