We Found You! (Obvious Spoilers)
As always, here’s a quick reminder of the schedule before we get into things for today. This is the twelfth day and I’ll be covering the saddest scene in anime for me. This one is a bit different than what day 25 will bring because I won’t be talking about a character dying. At least not in the traditional sense.
The very first Anime ABC’s I ever did featured Anohana which is an emotionally resonate series for me personally (as well as several others in the community). It deals with the tragic loss of a childhood friend for a close-knit group of people. They all cope (or don’t) with it in different ways and have to learn to move on from their grief. Pretty standard stuff, a heap of melodrama, and pretty sad.
I’ve mentioned before that the series is so personal for me because I’ve lost a lot of friends in really horrible accidents growing up. It’s relatable even if all the actual events in Anohana aren’t. With all that being said, you can of course read my full thoughts on the series via the link provided above. Today I’m just focusing on the ending of the series, so HUGE spoiler warning.
Last chance to bail if you haven’t seen this show already. It’s short, like 11 episodes, I can wait.
Ok, I think it’s safe for me to keep going at this point. Here’s a clip of said moment:
Apologies for such a long clip
In the end, Anohana slips into its emotional climax when the main character Jinta can no longer see Menma. She tells them that she is playing hide-and-seek knowing that she only has a few minutes left before she disappears. The gang frantically runs around searching for her and calling out. Finally, they are all able to see her (which in itself is special and meaningful) she says her final goodbye and then disappears with a, “You found me!”
I really, and I mean really like sad anime but not a lot of them do it for me. This is one of those shows that hits me hard. Not only that, but Anohana is one I can’t watch all that often. I could barely stand to look at that clip I provided for you. Not because I don’t like it but because it makes me legitimately sad. Shows like Clannad have their moments, but they have always fallen short of achieving the same level of emotional response from me that this series has.
We’ve reached the point where I turn things over to you. What is the saddest moment in anime for you? Let me know in the comments below. If you like what I’m doing here please consider donating to my Ko-fi. I hope you’ll come back tomorrow for day 13 of the challenge where I’ll be discussing what anime character I am most similar to. Oh, that’s a tricky one! As always, thanks for reading!
Anohana is a series I wanted to check out. My picks for saddest scenes…
Reki’s backstory from Haibane Renmei
Sayuri becoming comatose while her consciousness is alone across the multiverse in The Place Promised In Our Early Days.
The ending to Rurouni Kenshin: Trust and Betrayal…but Watsuki’s actions had to ruin the whole Kenshin franchise for me.
One death scene in Key the Metal Idol that happens late in the series and Key bawling her eyes out when she temporarily becomes human.
Grave of the Fireflies: THE WHOLE MOVIE!

Definitely recommend the show. If you haven’t read my ABC review for it I also recommend that (one of the better ABC posts I’ve done).
As for your picks, haven’t seen most of those but that last one though, yeah.

Sure thing. I think I remember seeing that post. I know you’ve mentioned it in a review.
No problem.

Anohana is an exceptional series. The ending does tug at the heart strings, but it was also a nice finale.

Definitely.

Since I always talk about Hughes death/funeral as saddest moment, I will change for a bit and say Masaoka’s death in Psycho-Pass.

I think those are both good choices for this one too.

Both are kind of similar when we think about it

Ushiooooooo-scene is the most breaking heart for me, have you watched Clannad AS?

Yes, I have! There is a reason I didn’t pick that one for today 😉

Ah I see, but those two-scene (with AnoHana’s ending) is the most breaking heart for me 😦

For a newer scene it would have to be the ending moments in episode 10 of Violet Evergarden. Man…I cried like a little baby! Another moment for me would have to be in Natsuyuki Rendezvous when they pose the question about losing a loved one. “Who does through more pain? The one who’s gone or the one who got left behind?” Emotionally, this anime screwed with my insides.

I wasn’t a huge fan of Anohana as I never connected enough with the characters to get any real impact out of the final scene. Clannad After Story worked for me but Angel Beats is my real heart breaking anime that just makes me cry every time.

Fair enough, those are also pretty excellent choices for sad stuff.

I hated this scene in the live action… They drug it out waaaay to long and blew it.
Saddest moment? There’s a lot of sad moments, but off the top of my head Otanshi’s goodbye to Tenshi/Kanadae in Angel Beats! would be right up there.

I haven’t seen the live action, but that sounds awful.
Yeah, there are so many sad moments in anime but that is another good one for sure!

When a certain character died in Naruto. (I’m not sure if you’ve watched/read Naruto so I don’t want to spoil anything) One OP for Naruto Shippudden also made me tear up the first time I saw it.

Woah, sorry man, your comment ended up in the spam folder for some reason. I’m just got it back and on the post now and am seeing it obviously haha. Any way, I have not seen Naruto but I know the moment. Personally, doesn’t do anything for me but probably just because I wasn’t invested in the show. Thanks for the comment though 🙂
