Overview
This is part of The 12 Days of Christmas
Navigating the seemingly endless number of shows and movies on sites like Hulu or Netflix can be a daunting task. For this list I went and found 5 great shows that you can watch right now on Hulu.
Both lists have shows that may be available from both streaming services, however, I will not denote this in the list. Shows mentioned are mostly for people newer to anime, but veterans who have yet to see some of these shows could easily enjoy them. Lastly, shows are not listed in any particular order.
1. Last Exile
Episodes: 26
Language: English or Subs
Genre: Adventure/Action
Considering this was the very first thing I reviewed on my site, I would be amiss not to recommend it. Last Exile is a high-flying adventure that follows Claus and Lavie as they journey among the clouds. The show is a bit slow to start, but trust me, it’s worth your time. To find out more, check out my review (which is spoiler free!) here.
2. Fooly Cooly (AKA FLCL)
Episodes: 6
Language: English or Subs
Genre: Comedy/Mind Screw
I’m not even going to try and summarize what this show is. It’s an experience that means different things to different people.
Fooly Cooly, or FLCL wasn’t exactly my cup of tea when I watched it. However, due to its importance in the anime community, and the fact that the show is at least an interesting ride, it is a worth-while recommendation. Don’t expect the show to make a ton of sense. Just sit back, enjoy the soundtrack, and enjoy the show.
3. Baccano!
Episodes: 13 (+3 OVA’s)
Language: English or Subs
Genre: Action/Mystery
Making my Rightstuf Buying Guide, Baccano! comes in with a strong recommendation for anybody looking for a smartly written story featuring immortals, gangsters, and intrigue all set in America (a rare thing indeed). The story is not told chronologically, so be sure to give this show your full attention when watching, but don’t worry, it’s not overly complex either. If you haven’t seen this then be sure to check this one out.
4. Durarara!!
Episodes: 24
Language: English or Subs
Genre: Action/Mystery
From the same creative mind behind Baccano!, comes this engaging story with a colorful cast of characters. Durarara!! requires no knowledge of Baccano! and is a logical next step if you have seen it. Featuring an easier to follow story, Durarara!! is great for newcomers or old veterans alike. Unlike Baccano!, Durarara!! is out of print so be sure to take advantage of its availability on Hulu.
5. Trigun
Episodes: 26
Language: English or Subs
Genre: Comedy/Adventure
Last up on this list is Trigun. This show can be funny and serious with plenty of action. The show is a spaghetti-western following the adventures of Vash The Stampede, a wanted man with a 60 billion double-dollar bounty on him. The show looks dated, and it unfortunately shows, but it is one heck of a ride.
Conclusion
Hopefully this list was able to give you a place to start for shows that are worth watching on Hulu. Of course, there are way more excellent series available from this service, so I’m sure I’ll be making more of these in the future!
Have you seen all of these shows? Did you love them or hate them? Have another great recommendation? Let myself and others know in the comments below!
Hulu isn’t available where I live sadly. On the plus side I own most of these titles on DVD. Last Exile is a bot of an underrated gem. I don’t hear many people talk about that show, but I really liked it. Out of those two Brain’s Base anime Durarara!! is my favorite.
